Bodor Ferenc: Coffee-Houses - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1992)

“In the present depopulated, impoverished, hamburgerized realm of catering, hostile to customers, those more advanced in years recall the smoke-filled cafés with their yellowed silk lampshades and tinkling pianos with wistful nostalgia. Coffee-houses and cafés have had their day, in present-day Budapest at least. The old cafés—like the Quint in the city hall building, a symbol of times past, one-time sanctuary of burghers and lovers —are slowly disappearing. In discarded mirrors we can still dimly discern the silhouette of the man-in-the-street, but the vision is illusion or nostalgia.” Published in the same series: Adamkó — Dénes — Leél-Őssy THE CAVES OF BÜDAPEST Péter Búza BRIDGES OF THE DANUBE Bob Dent BÜDAPEST FOR CHILDREN CITY HALL
