Chorches, Chapels, Ecclesiastical Relics One of the finest listed buildings of Budapest is the Church of Our Lady—better known as the Matthias Church, which was originally built in the 13lh century but which owes its present appearance to the reconstruction designed by Frigyes Schulek and completed by the late 19th century. Through the main entrance and to the right is the Chapel of Loreto. Legend has it that the Madonna statue here was presented to the church in 1515 by Wladislas 11. In fact, it was made later, around 1700. On the northern side of the church stands the Saint Ladislas chapel, the main wall of which is decorated with frescoes by Bertalan Székely depicting the events of the life of the half Polish knight king as well as his death. On the altar stands a replica of the reliquary bust of Saint Ladislas, which is housed in Győr cathedral. 44
