Plaque commemorating Woroniecki In 1932 a marble plaque was unveiled near the spot where Woroniecki died (on the wall of the Ministry of Agriculture facing Vértanúk tere). Endre Hajdú’s bronze relief shows the profile of the young officer. The following words can be read below the finely shaped portrait: Duke Woroniecki Mieczyslav / brave colonel in the Polish cavalry legion / in the 1848-H9 War of Independence / died a martyr in this place formerly called Fa tér / at the age of 23 / on 20 October 1849 / for the cause of Hungarian independence / and the thousand-year-old friendship between Hungary and Poland./ Hungarian-Polish Association. Some details in the text are inaccurate. Woroniecki was a lieutenant-colonel in the Hungarian army, did not serve in the Polish legion and was 24 years old at the time of his martyrdom. According to historical research undertaken by István Kovács, the nobility of the Woroniecki family was acknowledged in Galicia in 1810, but their dukedom was not.
