Across from the Amusement Park, on the other side of the park lies the sunbathers’ field, the 23 hectares of which was the site of the Budapest International Fairs from 1936 to 1972. After the site had moved, the largest development project of this century restored the City Park as the quiet retreat of plants. Almost all varieties of maple trees found in Hungary grow here, such as the great maple, Montpellier maple, silver maple and Norway maple. South of Heroes’ Square there are many horse chestnut trees. This pop­ular tree, also known as conker tree, is a native of the Balkans but grows well here. It is a choice tree for pathways as its large leaves provide ample shade. Un­fortunately its rough leaf blade is vulnerable to the sun’s rays reflected by the pavement and the pollution caused by traffic. Many old specimens are dying.
