Buza Péter: Spring and Fountains - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1994)
The ornamental well of a courtyard in the mediaeval Castle decorated water palace was creaeted by an unknown architect around 1795 on the edge of Ludovika tér, near the Botanical Gardens. This, of course, is not the first moment in the history of the well, of which we have already made cursory mention as a hydro-geological curiosity, an important edge water spring on the Pest side. THE DISCOVERY OF IlLYNA VoDA The first glorious period in the history of Illés Fountain dates back to Mátyás’ time, just like the use of almost all previously mentioned springs. There is, of course, only circumstantial evidence to prove this, but that is fairly substantial in itself. The Szentendre house of Arsen Csernovics, the head of the community of Serb immigrants to Hungary, was burnt down in 1696. He submitted a request to the Buda chamber administration for another house, one either inside the city walls of Pest or outside them, by Illyna Voda. Previously the municipality of Pest had also applied for the same plot as it was a spot abundant in water. A third party, a smallholder by the name of Donát Heuszier had also intended to lease the land. 21
