Nemes János: Healing Budapest - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1993)

Budapest, City of Baths

It took its final appearance in 1918. Its majestic art nouveau building is one of the Danube bank’s beauty spot. The thirteen springs, whose temperature ranges from 27 to 48 degrees Centigrade are piped from the inside of Gellért Hill. Because of the high calcium, magnesium, hydrocarbon, alkalia, sulphur and fluorine level they contain, they are suitable for treating several illnesses, such as intervertebral disk and spine problems, arthritis and gout. Chronic gynaecological problems can also be cured in the hotel’s salt baths. Its inhalation section treats asthma and bronchitis patients; arterial sclerosis and cardiac patients are treated in the hydrocarbonated bath section. Other services include mud baths, underwater massage, weight baths, electrotherapy and massage. Gellért Thermal Baths also has a 32 bed hospital ward open for Hungarians and foreigners. It has a very popular indoor swimming pool, called Pezsgőfürdő (Fizzypool, because of the artificial bubbles pumped up from the bottom). In the open air Hullámfürdő (Wavepool) huge waves are created by clever machines. This is, of course, a favourite of children mainly. Open: Weekdays: 6.30 am to 8 pm Saturdays: 6.30 am to 2 pm Sundays: 6.30 am to 1 pm (Address: ms Budapest, xi, Kelenhegyi út 4. TEL: 166-6166) The Gellért Hotel viewed from the Danube 36
