Before long it became evident that the fast growing twin cities had to break away from this constraint or the traffic between the two banks would soon be continuously jammed. Negotiations began as early as the late 1860s about how the treasury could purchase the bridge and redeem the rights. A treaty was signed in 1870, opening the possibility of constructing a new bridge in Pest-Buda, in the fastest-growing area. The location of the Margaret Bridge was chosen as the district of Lipót Town was fully developed by the second half of the 19th century thus creating a new ring around the growing city: the Grand Boulevard, Margit körút and other stretches of what was later connected into the Buda Boulevard.
