The Great Synagogue in Dohány utca
installed the spiral staircases to the women’s and choir galleries. On the ends of the projections are polygonal pilasters topped with smaller onion-domes. The whole fafade is crowned with a frieze with Persian and Islamic patterns. The cornice is formed into accentuated architectural ornaments arranged in various repeating geometric patterns. The windows are framed by orders of yellowish-white and red arches alternating in bands, and the arched windows themselves are also accentuated by bands. The ornamental bricks were made in the same Kőbányai brick factory that was later to provide construction material for Ödön Lechner's buildings. A vestibule leads to the interior of the three-nave temple, which is covered by a coffered ceiling. An impressive effect is made by the slender cast-iron supporting pillars. As well as the pillars separating nave from aisles and carrying the galleries, the arching, serrated beams connecting the pillars to each other are made of cast iron.
