Relief Representing the Guardians of Peace (Sándor Ambrózi—Károly Stöckert, 1953) This item has often been described as a work of unclear origins made by an anonymous artist. The history of the two reliefs, featuring marching pioneers, a border guard, a girl in the signal corps and a sailor, can be traced back to the early 1950s, the period when the new underground railway of Budapest was originally under construction. The only surface structure actually built at the time as part of the mammoth enterprise was a station near the People’s Stadium. Modelled on Soviet patterns, the cooperative effort of architects and artists resulted in thematic murals, mosaic walls, statues and reliefs designed in cooperation for the station, which in fact was never used. These two reliefs are taken from the frieze Guardiam of Peace, which decorated the station building. The twenty-one-metre long frieze girdling the architrave of the dome featured scenes from the life of the people's army.
