6oo Ft The underground miracles of Budapest are as little known to the inhabi­tants of the city as they are to the millions of tourists visiting here every year. These curious locations are introduced to the reader by the twin- volumes Underground Pe&t, Underground Buda. Although no natural cavities could be formed on the Pest side, there is an exciting, man-made underground world hiding beneath the Pest-side quarters of the city, built on the former catchment plain of the Danube, stretching all the way to the belt of hills rising above the level of Gellért Hill on the edges of the city. Despite being an organic part of the pulsating everyday life of the metropolis, this underground world remains mostly hidden, veiled as it is in a mystical haze.
