The catacombs of the 21st century - underground car-parks
Vámház körút (Bástya utca-Veres Pálné utca), in Hunyadi tér and in Nagymező utca. Another one is to be built under the statue of János Arany in the gardens of the National Museum, an institution renovated for its second centenary. Preparatory work for these underground car parks is often carried out amidst angry protestations, especially when parks and other green spots seem to fall victim to the project. This happened during reconstruction of the Gresham Palace, when an underground car park was being built under Roosevelt tér for the cars of the future hotel's guests. Although the green area has undoubtedly been reduced, the "re-landscaped" area awaits almost in its original grandeur the reconstruction of the Palace behind it. No doubt, underground car parks will only meet a fraction of the demand, there being no other way of creating new and decent parking spots where high fees enforce a quick turnover in the most densely packed areas of the inner city. 39
