The underground river of Pest - the mains trunk sewer underneath the Great Boulevard
The construction of the 4412-metre long mains trunk sewer was begun at Boráros tér and was completed in five major sections. It is at Boráros tér that the mains trunk sewer of the Great Boulevard meets one coming from the Danube bank, which extends southwards from this point; each of its segments measures 4.8 metres up and 4.5 metres across. This is how its proportions are suggested by a description from 1907; "...it would easily allow the passage of large carts loaded with hay”. The construction of the steam-engine-driven Ferencváros Pump House on Soroksári út was started in 1889, before the creation of large mains trunk sewers on the bank of the Danube. At low water levels the sewage collected in the mains flowed freely into the river, but when the Danube ran high the engines of the pump house raised it into the river bed. ■ An engraved drawing made by the Budapest Engineering Department A körút D A. körüli fSgyüJlö-]} (afopcciloTclan alkalmazva) csatorna.JyAlsjäröa} ’F.ÁTrilzelsáró víznyelő akna— öntöttvasból t9 bádogból 28
