network with a combined length of 45 kilometres, and a storage capacity of 13,284 cubic metres was available in the reservoirs at József Hill Minor and in Christina Town. Next to the latter there was a lift station driving potable water up to higher- level areas. When it was all completed in 1882, the long-awaited moment had arrived: the old waterworks of Buda were stopped, and Óbuda as well as the hilly regions were connected to the new system. The engine room of the Újlak plant is now an industrial monument having served as the longest-operating facility used by the Budapest Waterworks (50/A Árpád fejedelem útja, District III). The permanent waterworks of Buda was such a success that the water supply of Buda was, again on the recommendation of Wein, supplemented from this source when the temporary utility had to be removed to clear the space for the construction of the Parliament Building. The pipe on Margaret Bridge carried the daily amount of ten thousand cubic metres to the other side, but this led to the overexploitation of the filtering layers in a few years' time. This new threat to the water supply prompted the municipal assembly to place a ban on the issue of any permits, on the creation of new water-supply areas, and on the extension of the pipe system until the construction of a permanent, large-capacity waterworks in Pest. Three subsidiary plants were put into operation in the meantime: one next to the People’s Park (Népliget), another at the corner of Csanády utca and Pozsonyi út, and a third one ■ The hint waterworkó plant oh Buda 58
