Tibor Molnár: The history of trade and the Trade Corporation in Zenta until the end of WWI. The handicraft in Zenta was steadily developing even in the pre-Mohács era, which came to a halt during the Turkish occupation. The victorious battle of Zenta in 1697 put the future of the settlement on a different route. Planned colonization took place from the mid-1800s: crafstmen were also among the majority of farmers who came to settle down. The first guilds, tailors and furriers, were formed in 1776. The 19th century saw a boom in agriculture, as well as in handicraft, which used agricultural produces and had to meet the demands of the agricultural population. The trade law of 1872 brought about significant changes: guilds were abolished, new corporations were set up, the Trade Corporation of Zenta in 1888. The Trade Corporation of Zenta played an active role in the social and economic life of the town: Franz Joseph's visit in 1895 or the initiative of the building of the iron bridge spanning the Tisza River are good examples. The crafstmen of Zenta took part in the first world war, soap factory owner Ödön Horváth, chairman of the Trade Corporation of Zenta died in action in the Russian theatre of war in 1916. The peace treaty signed in 1920 annexed Zenta from the mother country: a new chapter in the life of the town and its craftsmen began. István Sándor had been the deputy notary to Péter Lestár, and notary to Elek Kada. The modern economy of Kecskemét took shape during the years of their leadership, with the network of financial institutions, the factory industry and the local train service coming into being. By 1914 Kecskemét had become a town with one of the biggest urban sprawls in Hungary, with the most grapeyards and orchards, and the highest apricot and peach production, which were sold at the local wholesale market or in the Naschmarkt in Vienna. At this time the second biggest canning factory of the country was built here on local produces, which mostly met the demands of the army. During the years of István Sándor's leadership war economy appeared which had an impact on urban life. Due to the conscription unemployment, scarcity and black market hit the town.
