VII. Mutatók

Abstract in the medium term. Their role became much appreciated in the second half of the 1750s, when a generation change took place in the chapter (after 1755) and in the commissary (in 1758). The 1750s saw another change of direction in his personnel policy. Henceforward he promoted young priests of around 30 years of age to key positions - also in the chapter - who used their preeminent skills to serve the diocese only much later, in the 1770s. Among them was Ignác Séllyei Nagy, the first bishop of the Diocese of Székesfehérvár, founded in 1777. An examination of those who took part in the governance of the diocese reveals that in this period there was - at least in comparison with the Transdanubian bishopries - a unique opportunity for the inferior clergy of the diocese actively serving as priests to be promoted to higher positions with the income of the canon; in fact, in the second half of the period they were the only source of those who were granted these positions. Márton Padányi Biro's career well exemplifies the career opportunity that talented priests could have under fortunate circumstances. Padányi Bíró was admitted to the chapter (1729) following his pastoral service in Bicske (1723), where he moved up the career ladder with the support of his superior. During this time he was also commissary of the diocese (1734-38), and was finally appointed bishop by the monarch (1745). With the exception of the bishopry, many from the clergy in the diocese took the same path. Appendix At the end of my study the archontology of the rural deans, canons and commissaries can be found in an appendix. I also give, for information, the register of the parishes functioning in the diocese in the period, and the incomes of the priests in three time segments (1735, 1754/55 and 1774/76). I have also created maps for a better understanding of the text. Some of them illustrate a problem, some depict the whole diocese in time segments (middle of the 1730s, second half of the 1750s and c.1777). 349
