The Administration of the Diocese of Veszprém The source of my study is primarily based on the documents of church administration in the Archives of the Archbishop and the Archdiocese of Veszprém. In the course of the exploration of the sources I collected data related to the subject matter for almost 900 settlements, such as the existence of the parish, date of foundation, filial relationships, ruridecanal districts, no- blemen/liege lords, monastic orders, presence of other denominations. This formed the basis of the study on the establishment of the intermediate church administration and the network of parishes. It soon became clear, however, that the topographical data collection cannot in itself explain questions arising from changes in the church administration. This prompted me to set about mapping the clergy of the diocese of the given period, consulting the list of historical names by János Pfeiffer, prince-provost of Veszprém and church historian, which was published in 1987. I collected the personal details of 577 priests, which was a primarily archontological collection aligned with the original goal of the study to reconstruct the church administration, but I also held it important to reveal details about the descendancy and studies etc. of the clergy. The core of the data warehouses was given by the registers for the whole diocese: the canonical visitations (canonica visitatio) from the 1740s and from 1778/79; registers of people (conscriptio animarum) from the 1750s and 1770s; registers of income (conscriptio proventuum) from the 1720s, 1750s and 1770s. The data elicited from these were made complete with other bundles of documents from the archbishopric and other archives. The establishment of the episcopal polity Up to 20 parishes can be traced back upon available data to 1710 in the diocese after preceding events in the 17th century. Half of them were located in Zala County in the western basin of Lake Balaton, mostly in the vicinity of Zalaegerszeg and Keszthely-Tapolca-Siimeg. In contrast, the protestant denominations were present in a large part of the diocese. Territories inhabited by protestants stretched from the Danube bend to the Drava River, only the central and western parts of Zala County were unrepresented by their denominations. The Lutherans had a scattered settlement layout; they were present in Veszprém County and in the south-western part of Somogy County. (See Map V.) During the first decades of the 18th century pastoral care was given to Catholic worshippers by monks, mostly Franciscan (the Convents of Buda, Székesfehérvár, Veszprém, Sümeg, Keszthely, Bucsuszentlászló, Andocs and Simontomya of the Catholic Province named after the Virgin Mary, the Convents of Kanizsa, Atád, Segesd and Szigetvár of the Province named after Saint Ladislaus, and the Convents of Buda and Dunaföldvár of the Bosnian Province). Besides the monks, the Ticentiati' - the laymen - must be noted for playing an active role in assisting the pastors. 344
