Tanulmányok a megyei igazgatás történetéről - Horváth Richárd: Pápától a pápáig (Garai-Szapolyai várbirtok változások Veszprém megyében a Mátyás-korban)

Horváth Richárd From Pápa to the Pope (Changes in Garai-Szapolyai castellanies in Veszprém county during the reign of king Matthias) Members of the aristocrat Szapolyai family enjoyed peculiar and the most important political influence during the reign of king Matthias Corvinus (Hunyadi) 1458-1490. It was Imre Szapolyai’s emphasised influence, regardless the fact that he actually did not hold any offices, and his unique and incredibly rapid advance that generated the above mentioned peculiarity. Their importance, however, originated in their unparalelled accumulation of possessions, which the family obtained between 1458 and 1474. An essential and early stage in this process of enrichment was acquiring those castellanies in Veszprém county, which earlier had been in the hands of the Garai family. As palatine László Garai, the last man of influence in his family had got involved in the plot against king Matthias in 1459, destiny of their estates was sealed. The rebel palatine and more particularly, his son, Job were „expelled” from the royal court. It can be demonstrated from the developed sources that Job made every effort at the royal court in order to regain his lost influence suited to the extent of his estates. By doing so, he attempted to make use of that influential Imre Szapolyai, who could be best characterised as the king’s favourite. Even though Szapolyai achieved some minor political advance for Garai, he, at the same time, vindicated right to all of Job’s castellanies (Somló, Ugod, Pápa and Csesznek) in Veszprém county. The author of this paper suggests - by virtue of a charter dated in 1461 — that even the king assisted in such accumulation of possessions for the Szapolyais. As a result of this cooperation, one of the monarch’s most important followers acquired weighty estates in that Western- Transdanubian region, where the 1459 plot against the king was realised Consequently, the Szapolyai family provided solid support for the king, whose realm was more undoubted than it had been considered. 368
