Tanulmányok a veszprémi egyházmegye történetéről - Hermann István: A VESZPRÉMI SZÉKESKÁPTALAN SZEMÉLYI ÖSSZETÉTELE 1700 ÉS 1777 KÖZÖTT

A VESZPRÉMI SZÉKESKÁPTALAN SZEMÉLYI ÖSSZETÉTELE 1700 ÉS 1 777 KÖZÖTT in 1749 should have been this very situation. The title of „honourable prebendary” did involve stipends or the obligation of residence. It was generally deans, the local heads of pastoral duty, who bore this title. Eight out of the nominated ten prebendaries, appointed after 1749, had born the title before their canonical appointment. In the period beginning in 1745, decanal districts provided the reserves for the personnel of the chapter. However, a striking regional unevenness can be observed: deans, serving in the territory of Somogy county, are far less in number compared to those who served in the other three counties (Fejér, Veszprém and Zala) of the diocese. The reason behind this might be the arrears of Catholicism in the former region, which idea is supported by the delay in parish-organisation there. Investigations of data have clearly revealed that transition between the level of parsons and that of the diocesan elite did exist. Deans of districts, rising from the group of parsons, provided the connecting link, and pre-eminent members of this group could enter the chapter via being appointed as „honourable prebendaries”. 225
