Instead of a preface HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES PRESIDENT 1

st March 1996 Budapest To Mr Ferenc Horváth My dear friend, I have received your kind request with thanks to write a preface to the new undertaking of the Vác Historical Storehouse, which is supposed to be launched as the publication of the Local Council and the Madách Circle of Vác, edited by the Vác Filial Archive of the Archive of Pest county. If I were not hindered by my tasks home and abroad in connection with the affairs of the Academy to bestow enough time - becoming a historian - to professional subjects, I could state in details why I consider the publication of sources relating to local history right and important, and besides making new generations get acquainted with our past and the memories of our culture's continuity. Besides the Hungarian Historical Storehouse once started by the Academy (1855-1863, 1867-1878, 1914-1934), the Historical Storehouse published by the Hungarian Historical Society for some time (1878-1911), the New Hungarian Storehouse issued recently again by the Academy in order to publish some shorter sources which can count on broader interest, local publication of sources has always had a great tradition. That is why I welcome this local initiation as a revival of good traditions, and also because of my personal relationships with your town and the Archive of Pest county. Although I have no opportunity to state all these thoughts in details, I consent willingly to the publication of this letter of mine instead of a preface, and as an expression of my best regards.
