„Úgy érzem, messze még az idő, amikor a magyar Endlösung sok százezer halottját a nemzet saját testéből kihasított veszteségnek érzi majd. Soká lesz még, amikor ott ráeszmélnek, hogy Auschwitz korántsem a világon szétszórt zsidók magánügye, hanem a nyugati civilizáció traumatikus eseménye, amelyet talán új időszámítás kezdetének fognak tekinteni egykor; sokáig várat még magára, amíg országomban talán felismerik a negatív tapasztalat értékteremtő erejét és fontosságát, s főként: amikor e negatív tapasztalatot pozitív tettekre váltják, megértve, hogy létre kell hozni a magánéletünk gyökereiig hatoló szolidaritást, amely az életet a hatalomtól - mindenféle hatalomtól - függetlenül is meg tudja szervezni és fenn tudja tartani - „»mind a rabszolgaságot, mind a birtoklást egyszerre vetve el«”. It will be a long time before it is realized that Auschwitz is by no means the private affair of the Jews scattered across the world, but rather a traumatic event of Western civilization, an event that someday will perhaps be regarded as the beginning of a new era in human history. We will have to wait a long time before the importance of this negative experience and its power to create value will be recognized in my own country, and, more importantly, this negative experience will be changed into positive acts, an understanding that we must create a solidarity in our private lives that penetrates to the roots, a solidarity that is able to give structure to and sustain life independent of power, all kinds of power, “»refusing at the same time both servitude and possession«”.
