66 VÁC'S REMAINS FROM THE LATE MIDDLE AGES (1 301 -1 526) Vac’s remains from the late Middle Ages (1301—1326) POLITICAL EVENTS Medieval stone gate in the cellar of the archives Buda in the 15th century tutions of the royal court, such as the law courts, the treasury and the chancellery, worked there. The king's council was usually held there, too, as well as the diets (or parliaments), which started their work at the end of the Árpád era. As everywhere else in Europe, the king's residence became a permanent place only in the 13th century; up to that time the royal court had mostly been on the move. From the time of Béla IV (1235-1270) onwards Óbuda, then Buda (parts of present-day Budapest) housed the SOURCES Most of the written historical sources related to the medieval town were destroyed during the Ottoman wars, so the history of the town can only be put together relying upon some deeds and a few scattered references. We can trace back medie­val circumstances - for lack of any better - from a Turkish property register and some engravings and maps from the 17-18th centuries; street names of Vác are only available from the Otto­man era. The destruction of historical sources to such an extent was not a unique occurrence in the case of Vác; it was characteristic of each part of the country under Ottoman rule. The material remains of the Middle Ages have been brought to the surface by archaeological excavations, the few remains standing in their original places are some houses that have been rebuilt and altered, the Pointed Tower, and the cellars below the town. In the Middle Ages the triangle made up by the towns of Esztergom, Székesfehérvár and Buda and their neighbourhood were regarded as the centre of the country.
