EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN 285 Nógrád............................................. The Castle of Nógrád, which gave its name to the county, is one of the oldest stone castles in Hungary. It is a construction of irregular plan and is impressive even in ruins. It was called Novigrad, i.e. New Castle because there had been fortifications here even before the stone castle was built. In the 12th century it was a royal estate, then it was bestowed on the bishop of Vác. In the second half of the 15th century Miklós Báthori Bishop of Vác built a Renaissance palace-wing by the high keep. A coat of arms with dragon of the Báthori family found here was marked with the date of 1483, which could have meant the end of the constructions. Today it is in the Diocesan Collection of Vác. In 1685 lightning struck the gunpowder tower and an enormous detonation destroyed the whole castle. The remaining parts were demolished in the following years, which meant the end of the military significance of the castle. Since 1997 preservation and reconstruction work has been going on.
