EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN 283 Roman Catholic church Kemence •••••••••••••••• It is one of the oldest villages of the Ipoly Valley, an ancient Palots (palóc) settle­ment. Its placenames recall the long­­ago royal hunting area and the nearby castles. At the beginning of the 20th century an over 50-km-long narrow­­gauge railway system was in service in the environs of Kemence; today only a short section ofthat and the forest rail­way museum preserve its memory. The village was formed by the merg­ing of two ancient settlements. For a long time the nearby Drégely Castle played a determining role in its life.The medieval church on a hilltop was built on a fortified place, where the earth­work, the walls and the building itself had preserved traces of earlier centu­ries. The village was famous for mak­ing panniers ("hátyi") commonly used for carrying loads, a type of which is named "bernecei"after the village.
