EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN 283 Roman Catholic church Kemence •••••••••••••••• It is one of the oldest villages of the Ipoly Valley, an ancient Palots (palóc) settlement. Its placenames recall the longago royal hunting area and the nearby castles. At the beginning of the 20th century an over 50-km-long narrowgauge railway system was in service in the environs of Kemence; today only a short section ofthat and the forest railway museum preserve its memory. The village was formed by the merging of two ancient settlements. For a long time the nearby Drégely Castle played a determining role in its life.The medieval church on a hilltop was built on a fortified place, where the earthwork, the walls and the building itself had preserved traces of earlier centuries. The village was famous for making panniers ("hátyi") commonly used for carrying loads, a type of which is named "bernecei"after the village.
