EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN 277 VtYOCC ••••••••••••••••••••••• Before the Ottoman era Verőce had been a prosperous market town. In addition to the Hungarians, Slovaks and Germans settled here in the 18th century. The appearance of holiday makers at the end of the 19th century changed the image of the village with the row of terraced villas built between the main road and the Danube. Due to its favoured position the cultural life of the town got livelier, several famous writers like Endre Ady, Zsigmond Móricz, Dezső Kosztolányi, Frigyes Karinthy and the composer Zoltán Kodály spent their holidays in Verőce.
