222 SIGHTSEEING [ A centre of everyday shopping, the market place gary. Hedvig (or Jadwiga) was the legendary Polish queen, who is considered to be the patron saint of the Danube Bend. The statue was made by Tibor Horváth. Behind the church is the town market. At both of its entrances we can find the stone-framed gates of the former Zöldfa Mill of the bishopric, which were carved by Mátyás Kmelich in 1755. The metal wing of the door is a reconstruction made on the basis of the original design. The female costermongers of Vác and the neighbourhood used to be well-known figures all over the country. They regularly travelled to the markets of other towns as well and carried on a kind of intermediary trade. Freshly baked loaves were provided by the millers' A former commercial house, the house with an EIl,___ wives, who had plenty of good-quality flour. They even supplied Pest with bread for some time carrying it there by ship every dawn. In addition to common crops and products Vác was famous for its roast goose and liver sausages sold at the market place. Fish and poultry were sold at a different place because they were not allowed to be sold in the Main Square. Nowadays all kinds of products have their stalls in the market, which is especially busy on Tuesdays and Fridays. The row of houses on the western side of the square parallel with the Danube show some beautiful forms and ornaments. The corner house opposite the market gate is one of the oldest buildings of the town. The Elephant House reminds us of the grocers who played an important part in the food supply of Vác. As a signboard, the elephant indicated the selling of colonial goods. The house at No 17 was built by Prebend Ferenc Würth for his nephew, Antal, who later
