high, and the height of the cross on the dome is 6 metres. The interior is simple and comprehensible at a glance. Its plan is cross-shaped, the dome rests upon the intersection that lets some natural light in. The frescos of the high altar and the dome were created by one of the most outstanding painters of the age, Franz Anton Maulbertsch. The picture on the high altar depicts the Visitation, the Virgin Mary visiting St Elizabeth, or the meeting of the two preg­nant women. For some reason the bishop must have been dissatisfied with the work because soon after it had been finished, he had it covered with the oil The meaning of the acronym D.O.M. (Deo Op­timo Maximo) is “to the Greatest and Best God". Un­derneath it there is the title of the church in Latin: in honour of the Virgin's Assumption to Fleaven and St Michael Archangel. By this double titling the patron saints of the two former cathedrals were actually unified and the veneration of the Blessed Virgin of the former church in the castle and that of St Michael in the German town was maintained and passed on [to future generations]. From the begin­nings we know of three bishopric churches in the castle; there was a fourth one in the German town, which was still in use after the Ottoman period, so the present one is the fifth bishopric cathedral in Vác. It is 76 metres long, 34 metres wide, 52 metres St Jacob painting made by Johann (Kremser) Schmidt. This valuable depiction of the Golgotha was removed from before the fresco in the early 1940s. The vast plain wall surfaces are broken only by some windows. The dome weighs on the walls and dominates the building. Six pairs of Corinthian columns with a special intercolumniation [i.e. specially spaced] form a portico on the fagade. Above the cornice, as if the columns were continued, are the statues made by József Bechert: the Virgin Mary and St Joseph flanked by the four apostles, Peter, Paul, John and Jacob.
