18 THE PLACE WHERE THE PLAIN, THE MOUNTAINS AND THE DANUBE MEET Fish and crabs in the book about the Danube by Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli, published in The multi-faced Danube Bend FISH INTHE DANUBE According to the research of recent decades, there are about 72 species offish in the Hungarian section of the Danube. The most typical ones are the sterlet, the carp, the pike, the catfish, the barbel and the bream. In addition there are some special species as well. The more sensitive species need balanced conditions, which are impossible to provide nowadays because of the controlled riverbed and the continuous ship transport. Taking European Union directives into account, which order the Danube to be made navigable at full length, we must realize that we cannot expect the situation to improve but get worse instead. Some of the quite sensitive and thus rare protected species are the following: the Danube lamprey; the spined loach; the bitterling; the Danube salmon; the Mediterranean barbel from the brooks, an aboriginal species of the Carpathian Basin. The Streber (Zingel Streber), the Danube roach and the European bitterling live nowhere else but in the Danube or its watershed, which means that their survival depends on the [natural] conditions of the river.
