162 VÁC IN THE 20TH CENTURY Vác in the zoth century In the palmy days of peace the citizens of Vác had an optimistic view of the future, at least this is what the editorial of Váci Hírlap (Journal of Vác) suggests in its issue of 25 February 1900: The town, which used to be indebted, has been saved by the town councillors, who are proficient in managing financial matters. They have had drains built, streets paved and trees planted, and all that has been done in such a reasonable way that no extra taxes have been raised in spite of the increased expenses. No town of similar size or wealth has nicer or better arranged main roads than Vác. The issue of public lighting will soon be settled, at least we hope so. The subject of water will also be taken up. An agreement will probably be made with the new bishop regarding the vast area of the Fairground, which will mean not only the growth of the assets of our town, but also the chance of building a new, modern district there. !Ne will have a hospital, an alms-house, and the town will be working hand in hand with our charity institute for the benefit of our citizens. All in all, in a few decades Vác will become a definitely modern town. Their achievements made them confident, and their trust in a slow but relentless development helped them over the difficulties. They hoped for a new, nicer and more peaceful world setting in the new century. However, this optimism was not shared by I everybody. As in most provincial towns, the lack of mains water and drainage resulted in polluted drinking water and damp flats. Even if "Egyptian darkness" was soon over with the installation of electric lighting, healthy drinking water was not available until 1928. VAC R.T.
