Letterhead paper of Reitter Cart Factory From the sample album of Reitter Cart Factory t \ In the 1870s the guild system was disbanded. Their role was taken over by independent handicraft workers and the industrial associations representing trades, then by the Vác and Area Industrial Corporation. The training of apprentices was a state function and was carried out by trades schools. From the 1850-1870s onwards factory industry, with mainly hand-made products, was represented by Reitter's Cart Factory, Neumann's Vinegar Factory, Udvardy and Floffmann's Steam Mill, Saxlehner's Straw Capsule* Factory and Lőwinger's Leather Furniture Factory. Károly Preszburger's Lőwinger furniture, Furniture Store 1880 In the 1880s the devastation by the phylloxera was a real disaster for the vineyard owners, who lost their livings. The number of unemployed was further increased by the handicraftsmen who were unable to keep up with progress, and the landless crowds. In the beginning this new labour force was employed mainly by the factories in Budapest, Újpest and Rákospalota. Later the town encouraged the establishment of new factories by providing some benefits for them (free building sites, tax exemption), despite some political protesters who wanted to prevent the spirit of labour movements from infiltrating Vác. The first representative of factory industry, the First Hungarian Weaving and Knitting Factory Co Ltd settled here in 1889, followed by the Vác Cylinder Mill Co Ltd and the Zinc Rolling Mill Co Ltd in 1891. All other significant factories of the town were founded in the 20th century. Several labour organizations as well as credit and insurance companies were set up by the nearly two hundred tradesmen and five hundred manufacturers of the town, including the Industry and Trade Credit Bank in 1870, the Vác and Area Credit Unit and the Industrial and Economic Credit Unit of Vác in 1900. * It is the protective sleeve put on bottles to protect the cork.
