THE 1 9TH CENTURY -THE CENTURY OF GREAT CHANGES 139 The club-house of the Shooting Society of Vác opposite the Stone Bridge of subsequent monarchsJhe authorities possessing a higher degree of autonomy made an increasing number of resolutions manifesting human, civic and national pride. For example, in 1805 the town of Vác also adopted the decree passed by Pest County ordering the official use of the Hungarian language; or, the subject of good housekeeping was introduced at girls' schools; or, Sunday schools providing continuing education were started in the 1840s, and the first nursery school was opened in 1845. In accordance with the spirit of the Reform Age a resolution was passed about the "education of mankind" so that children "would be raised not only to fear God but also to obtain the means by which they could acquire earthly goods". As early as the 1820s it was considered important that girls should not just get basic instruction at school but the foundations of housekeeping be taught as well. Due to health care reforms some of the children in the town were vaccinated against pox. The coat of arms of the Shooting Society Hopeful times! Changes occurred in several fields, and they were further inspired by the sparks struck by the theatrical companies arriving at the town on canvas-top wagons as well as by journals that were subscribed to, or by Kossuth's newsletters. In 1844 Lajos Kossuth, one of the leading figures of the age, wrote a letter to the Target Shooting Society in which he outlined his ideas about the necessity of the reasonable transformation of the national economy.
