INTRODUCTION 13 the community centre - has its own contri­bution to keeping and sharing our common cultural heritage. Why is Vác a good place to visit and stay in for a while? Our town is situated in one of the loveliest re­gions of Hungary, in the Danube Bend. It is only 30 km far from Budapest and lies at the junction of the Börzsöny and Cserhát Mountains, Naszály Hill, the rolling country of Gödöllő and the Pest Plain. It is easy to reach Vác by road, rail, boat or even cycle-path. If you stay in Vác, the capital city of the Danube Bend, overnight, one-day trips can take you to places like Visegrád, Szentendre, German, Czech, Slovak or Italian ancestors may have played their roles. But the town has not only a past but a present as well. Being a festival town it of­fers a variety of programmes to the visitors in each season. Our museums, community centre, open-air swimming-pool, parks and other en­tertainment facilities provide a wide choice of activities for tourists. Every year, at the end of July the town has a three-day festival called Váci Világi Vigalom (Worldly Entertainments of Vác) to commemorate Empress Maria Theresa's visit to Vác. We keep contact with seven sister towns and we have a close cultural relationship with the town of Yurihonjo in Japan. The traditional groups and bands of these towns regularly join these programmes.
