The secondary grammar school, established by the Piarists in 1714, gained nation- Eiementary school yyjdg reputation and a large catchment area encompassing several northern counties. The two-year lyceum, which extended the curriculum of the grammar school and tought legal and philosophical subjects as a basis for theological studies, was also run by them. The Seminary was one of the higher education institutions and it functioned until 1952. Although in the first half of the 18th century the counter-reformation consolidated the Roman Catholic faith and church, in the second half of the century a new and "dangerous" philosophy began to gain ground called the Enlightenment.
