However, the ap­pearance of the town houses started changing in the second half of the 19th century when a new storey was built upon the single-storey houses and - according to the trends of the time - the fagades were decorated in eclectic style. In accordance with the new development plans, from the beginning of the 18th century on­wards the ruined and burnt-out houses were pulled down as well as the ruined town walls, and the moat by the town walls was filled in. This way the medieval structure of Vác could be preserved and it was possible to expand the area of the town. Due to this monumental work the second half of the century saw the development of the secular centre of the town in the Main Square. St Michael's Church - locally called the Cathedral, the Big Church or the Old Church -, which stood in the northern part of the Main Square, was in the 1760s pulled down together with the neighbouring buil­ding a few metres away. The latter had probably functioned as the town hall, and only its cellar has survived.Thus the Main Square was extended and it became surrounded by mainly two-storey houses, with some single-storey buildings here and there. While in the Middle Ages the Town Hall stood in the middle of the Main Square, in 1764 it was built
