102 VÁC IN THE OTTOMAN ERA The Urbárium of Vác of 1634 Due to the fact that in the second century of Ottoman rule in Hungary the treasury gave up the strong centralised system of tax collection and redistribution of income, fewer and fewer documents were produced. No population census was taken either, only the combined lists of various taxes are available at best. For this reason it is difficult to say how the Hungarian inhabitants of Vác survived the vicissitudes of the long war at the turn of the century. A list made in 1632 registered 70 Christian tax units in the town. However, this tax unit did not mean the same as it did in the 16th century, i.e. the family and their holding. In the 17th century it was a bigger unit, the content of which is unknown. This hardly believable result is proved by a register from 1653; this time not Turkish but Hungarian called the urbárium. It recorded 236 heads of families including 11 widows. It means that there were more Hungarians living in Vác in the middle of the 17th century than at the end of the previous century, despite the fact that in addition to the losses inflicted by the war, this period saw a decline in the economy especially in the export of ~~ I ÍUU ViroA‘ W V Atfctni, *.}■& Jim, JtC, (Sty— Mm- „AiytUri, -V, «-'lA, T A Cfj.
