this reason I have chosen these words as my text, in order to make a "Comparison between the history of our nation and that of our church“, and that from this inspiration also, which now fills our hearts concer­ning the future of our country we may draw encourage­ment with regard to our church, too. I trust I shall not abuse your patience; therefore, I request your kind attention. I. The history of our country and our Church, dear Christian Brethren resembles much each other con­cerning their foundation. Árpád, our Chief appears with a little band on the Carpathian mountains and in a short time occupied this beautiful country, which God has abundantly blessed with all the treasures of na­ture, which people need not only to keep up their life, but also that by their industry and the use of their power, they may rival other nations in wellbeing and culture. It is our country of which the poet sings: ”If the earth is the fffirX of God, our country is the cxomu upon it." But be it as it may our hearts beat with enthusiastic love for our fatherland, upon the soil of which ten centuries engrave immortal names. We cling to it like a child to its dear mother. We envy neither the high mountains covered with snow of Switzerland, nor Provence’s field sung of by poets.
