If I wanted to put you to an anxious and heavy trial, I would say: choose between your country and your church! Search your hearts, and exanime the nerves of your brain, and tell me which of these you can pluck out without bleeding and being mamed: is it your faith or your nationality? Will you wander as exsiles from the earthly, rather than from the heavenly, abode? Tell me, whether a fatherless or a motherless orphan’s lot is easier to bear ? But I shall spare you this ordeal, if you will take it for granted that religion is not antagonistic to pat­riotism, but that they strike the sweetest and most per­fect harmony together; and that none can neglect the one without offending the other. Believe me, and you know it, forsooth, that the best ministers have always and everywhere been great patriots, so are they today, and so will they he at all times: wherefore I need not any further investigate the patriotic duties of a minister.
