The systematic religions of the world have, at the same time, been dominant on the state, and so are they, for the most part, to-day. Organization, legislation, mi­litary affairs, and social life, have all been directed, or checked, by them. Both science and art have owned their influeuce — and the peoples’ future, to a great extent depended on them. Herein lies the unparalleled historic import of the Priesthood. Owing to its all­­absorbing sway, the temporal power had joined it, and here and there it succeeded on gaining the upper hand, or else they shared the spheres of dominion. And so it was also with Christianity whose exter­nal power, the Church, could not have been braved by any one, without sustaining a heavy loss. The Refor­mation, however, had struck a fearful blow on the iron­clad of the Church. Then followed the Deists, the En­cyclopaedists, and the French Revolution, which, apart from the striking, but transient details of warfare, had caused to appear a constant transformation that is being realized in ever widening circles, and in the drift of which the Christian world is more or less involved, viz. the separation between Church and State.
