161 many other ministers, 2 Roman Catholic Priests attended and one made a most sympathetic speech. I do not interpret this sympathy as a sign that these people are becoming Unitarian, but they are becoming more charitable to us, and admitting that we and they have common Christian aims before us. But there is no doubt that there are increasing numbers of Unitarians in spirit in other communions ; we get more and more ministers from outside, and rejoice in this addition to our strength. Cultivated men of all churches have a tendency to think with us in many points. This is especially the case with lay members of the Church of England. Perhaps one reason why they do not join us is that, where they are, they find so many congenial spirits around them. We wish all these would have the courage of their convictions and come out of what to them must — in a measure — be as a House of Rimmon ; but none the less — we can rejoice in the spread of our convictions, it is paving the way for a higher future; and whether our church is aggrandised or not is but as the smallest dust of the balance, if truth only shall prevail. Finally, our people are sound to the core, and true to their heritage, as servants of nothing meaner than the truth and righteousness of God, not to be tested by numbers, but to be served — in however small a minority — with deathless fidelity. Never did I look on with higher hope to the eomsing time in our churches, for never was their spirit braver truer, or more earnest.
