Exactly what the changes exhibit, namely the nearer approach of spiritual Truth, the clearer vision of spiritual things, is that which is permanent in religion. The growing radiance of the idea of God, the re­ligious and spiritual relation itself, with its holy aspi­rations and divine life, this it is which is permanent in religion. * * * The Universe has become enlarged before our eyes. New stars have risen upon our sight. New regions of space have been opened, beyond which yet newer and grand­er reaches of space are continuously stretching, whose bound melts into Infinity. The duration of the universe is extended to periods of immeasurable time; an interval which eludes finite calculation, lies between the begin­ning of things, the first breathing of life and the living moment of this present hour. The inner being of the constituent bodies of the Universe is a discovery, like that of a new world where latent forces slumber, forces whose potency, exerted from body to body, stir the waves upon the ocean of a distant globe. Within the visible atmosphere are flowing, all unseen, mighty currents of electricity, regulating the law of fearful storm, while in their gentler issues, they transcend the swiftness of the winged thoughts of men. Forces change, but perish not; in new forms they reappear. The heavenly bodies have attraction to each other, like hearts whom long distance severs. — The Universe is indeed enlarged to our view! As we look on the world, new phenomena salute our gazing eyes. Fresh portions of our race are brought into sight, bearing to us from longpast stages of progress, traditions of ancient time, glimpses of origin, rumours of common descent. Fresh glories are at hand, of which imagination dared not even to dream before. Fresh forces are now applied in the work
