Our ancestors were truly in need of a strong character and a Jinn faith in order to maintain their existence. The spirit of Francis Dávid always nourished and re­­freshed them. Thanks be to God that a few thousands were saved! Now we may be of good cheer and of a fervent hope because the future is ours In a free country of free institutions our liberal faith shall prosper. Let us therefore step over the thres­hold of a new thousand year with the inspiration of this brotherly meeting. Because we despised all worldly advantages, and were firmly attached to our country, to our faith and condition, we always struggled on a thorny path. And now, that we are still living and are not swept away by the flood, we have to thank only ourselves, and that ancestral fqjttli, which has always been living in us. Lot us tend to it! The territory of our country is large enough to embrace all its inhabitants, let them belong to any nation or denomination, to live together in peace. Everybody can speak his own mother-tougue, and may adore his God in accordance Avith his faith and conviction. But let all of us be one in regard to our constitution and our love of our native country. The characteristic _of Hungary must be. Hungarian iflone^ for this is Avhat has preserved it amidst so many adversities. The Hungarian race has always defended its own constitutional freedom, for it held it as essen­tial to its existence, as air is to living beings. That freedom of thought, which has been spreading over all Europe from the beginning of this century, has taken such a strong hold of our country, that to try to eradicate it now would be quite impossible.
