106 good opportunity to see those wonders of human acti­vity, which are produced by industry and intelligence. They are acquainted with your genuine family and social life, and coming home, they try to act up to it and to introduce all good things, which they learn in your grand country. And such noble examples are readily followed with us also in the interest of our country. For all these benefits we are obliged to you dear Brethren in faith. I welcome the Representatives of our English and American Unitarian Brethren as a Hungarian also. I welcome you as the free citizens of free countries, who are fond of liberty as we are. Tell your countrymen that you have seen our Millennial Exhibition and that it was worthy to our nation. But if you will make excur­sions in the different parts of our country, perhaps you will be disappointed in your expectation, for not finding culture and progress equal to that of Budapest. It is quite natural. But tell your friends at home what you have seen in Budapest it was the work of only thirty of fourty years. While you were in peace on the West, we had to fight against the Turks and defend the peace and Christianity of Europe. Therefore when you give your opinion of our civili­zation, you must think of our hard trials and severe circumstances. Our forefahers, while holding the Bible, on the Greek and Latin classics in one hand, had to hold the sword in the other. It is no wonder then, if in such circum­stances, culture which prospers only in peace, could not make greater progress with us. Such was the condition of our countryin the past. But all sufferings, all the hard times are over. Brifer days have come. After darkness : there was light.
