In judging values He does not use our materialistic standards of earthly measurement. From the moment of creation He has established the standard: the standard is Himself. God created man in his infinite image and likeness and has given man the duty of working unceasingly in life for the more perfect development of that likeness. God does not take into consideration the number of man’s possessions, or the comfort of his daily life, but the faculties of his soul. What use has he made of understanding and of will? How has he developed the life of his will and his intellect? Has he increased the creative powers of his soul? Has he come to know and love God better? As in the life of the individual, so in the life of a nation. God loves us or does not love us according to the degree to which we use or neglect these faculties. This fact stands behind the part each nation must play in history. There is no doubt that in the plans of God those nations have the most important and the most significant historical mission whose members keep before their eyes the purpose of their creation. Consequently, it is important that the nation preserve, develop and hand down these values to others. Thus, we see that it is man’s vocation to preserve this image of God in himself, and we find the greatest value in the fact that man is willing to make the supreme sacrifice to preserve that likeness. With this in mind, as we examine the Hungarian fight for freedom, we cannot help but be convinced that God’s love is there. The heroic stand of our beloved countrymen has given a new corroboration to the premise that God assigns the historical role of a nation not on the basis of its material possessions, but on the strength of its spirit. The Hungarian nation has shown the superiority of spirit over weapons, the invincibility of a determined will in the face of bloody terror. That God, in His Providence, has selected this nation* is a sign of his special love. He was there at the beginning of the struggle for freedom. He made our Hungarian brothers the bulwarks of Christianity. That is why we most earnestly believe that in spite of the terror and mass slaughter, there will always be hope for a happier future. The strength of the spirit will be manifested in the reconstruction of the nation. The nation has realized a unity wonderful to behold and this unity has made every member of it aware of his historical role. Thus, with all its soul and its faith, and with a Christian world outlook, the nation struggles against Communism. This dedication does not call for death but for the will to live. Nor does this mean that we may now sit on our hands and idly await the outcome, the birth of a happier future for the Hungarian people. There are essential duties too. Hungarians abroad and all peoples must wrestle with the sad present. Together with those who stayed behind, they must proclaim the superiority of the spirit over the material and must undertake a serious and determined battle for the destruction of the Communist view of life. The freedom fighters and all those who have escaped tyranny at the risk of their lives now have a very serious task to perform, from which all of us may derive a benefit. We ask them not to forget after they have come to these shores the ideals for which they fought. They come to America as ambassadors to proclaim to the world the determination of a people who have suffered much and fought heroically. We advise them to remove whatever barnacles of Communist education may have clung to them, and by an exemplary life to show all men that they appreciate the good will shown to them. Blessed is the people which enjoys the special love of God. As Hungarians we are proud and happy that we have been found worthy of helping God to fulfill his Divine Plan for mankind.
