lective form of life of the primaeval community. Of course a reign of terror makes things much more uncomfortable, for revolts and resistances cause a lot of trouble. It is far simpler to raise a stupified, undemanding generation that will be a faithful slave to the handful of men who now play with millions of human beings as if they were chessmen. But they do not realize that the decay of morals and the destruction of the family and the individual must necessarily be followed by the dissolution of society. The lanky, smiling schoolmate of mine, member of the U.S. Athletic Team went last year to Hungary among other places behind the Curtain. It seems quite natural that our common experiences there led to long conversations. Here are a few impressions of a young American censured only by his attempt to spare my feelings about my country. Since I do this recollection without having his permission — no use to ask for it, we never would get it, I am afraid — we ought to find some excuses why do I augment the vast number of sometimes not very interesting articles about East Europe? The reason is that there are too numerous to name writings as life in Poland or schools in Russia but there are none about Hungary, which irritates my nationalism. After all, we might make the headlines again . . . It would be worthwhile to find out why some communist-governed countries are in the spotlight of public interest and some are not. In our case perhaps the inevitable memories of the 1956 revolution would bilaterally spoil the trip there, as far as the visitor and the government is concerned. It may be that the official hosts are not so friendly than let us say the semiflannel packed boys of the Sov- Tourist.
