The highest heavens and galactic fire-sphere which run obeying Thy wink's order and revere, with worms invisible, all stones small and grand: are makings of Thy wonder-working hand. It's Thou, who broughtest forth of naught a million kind of this huge all ... Thy brow can make, wind and unwind, destroy with twinkle hundreds of great universes, while measures out the rolling Time's traverses. Thy praises zenith high and nadir deep resound, the bitter fights of tempests, heavens fire-crowned oak-cleaving lightning, drop of dew on daffodil, proclaim what wrought Thy great hand and Thy will. In dust I prostrate fervent at Thy Face, 0 Holy... if soon this soul of mine will rise from lowly, and fettered state, she reaches Thee, o there what now she pines for. there will be her share. Until, I wipe my tears, continuing my course, to me assigned in destiny, but Thy sweet force, the road of better souls, of noble solitary, until and where my sinews may me carry. In trust, I look into my sepulcher's deep sight; it's grim, but cannot wicked be the plight: it is Thy work! There, too, my scattered bones will rest, within the shelter of Thy Hands, all blest. Translated by S. Bujdosó (Dec. 29. 1980) DANIEL BERZSENYI was one of the so called “Classical (Deakos) School” in the Hungarian Literature. Born into a small-land-owner noble family in Vass County (megye). He would have never reached public fame if not of Lutheran Bishop of Sopron, Janos Kiss, a friend, who visited him and saw his writings; “Claws of lions, do I recognize here!” —Bishop Kiss exclaimed, and encouraged Berzsenyi to publish his works. This was made largely possible by a major contribution from the Catholic Seminarians of (Buda)-Pesth. Berzsenyi was also the favorite poet of the great Stephen Széchényi. Berzsenyi followed the style of Latin lyric poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus Horace, whose metric skills and lofty style he can equal; whose moral, patriotic, philosophic ideas and level he can excel. Of all modern languages, the Magyar is able to equal classic metric and variations of old Greek stanzas, which Berzsenyi masterfully showed. The translator, instead of the original’s Alcaeic verse, used the customary rhyming iambics in English. (B.B.) BOOKS AVAILABLE FROM HUNGARIAN EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION 1. -TEXT BOOKS SERIES NO.
