HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE COURSE AT RUTGERS After an absence of more than fifteen years, instruction in the Hungarian language wiH be re-introduced into the curriculum of undergraduate colleges of Rutgers University of New Brunswick. Beginning in September and lasting for the entire academic year, a course in Elementary Hungarian will be given during the 5th period (2:50-4:10 p.m.) three days a week. Each semester will grant 4 credits, and the credit is equal to other elementary language courses on the New Brunswick campus. Please encourage students enrolled in Rutgers, Douglass or Livingston Colleges to sign up for a course. The precise number can be obtained by calling the Slavic Department at 932-7604. The re-introduction of instruction of Hungarian is part of a 3-year experimental program which has the support of the Dean’s office of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers. It is hoped that the elementary course will be followed by a course at the intermediate level and ultimately with a course in Hungarian literature. Funds to support this 3-year pilot program are urgently needed. A separate fund called Hungarian Studies Fund has been created through the Rutgers Foundation at 191 College Avenue in New Brunswick and donations can be sent to it. Let us hope that members of the Hungarian-American community rally around this program in order to demonstrate interest and guarantee its success. Although the Hungarian population at large is only an indirect beneficiary of this program offered at Rutgers, every Hungarian-American should regard financial contribution to it as his/ her primary moral duty. Only through such programs will the Hungarian language and literature be seen as an integral part of the Western cultural heritage. Without such programs can one expect the Western world to be able to evaluate the past and present of the Hungarian nation? A szemeszterenként négy kreditet nyújtó nyelvtanfolyam egyenlő szintű más alapvető nyelvkurzusokkal. A Magyar Nyelvkurzus Kezdőknek az 1986-87-es tanév folyamán hetente háromszor szerepel a Rutgers Egyetem New Brunswick-i részlegén (2:50-4:10). Ezt a nyelvkurzust a Rutgers Egyetem minden beiratkozott diákja felveheti. A kurzus címe: Elementary Hungarian.
