Without first interviewing us to ascertain the facts before jumping to dire conclusions, the prolific authors of these figments of vivid imaginations have implied that we are pro-Communist because of our “Travel Hungary” page and our “News from Hungary” section, in which we did not pretzelize information to fit into an unfavorable mold. They even attempted to convey the impression that, because we dared to report on the Hungarian World Federation’s fundraising drive on behalf of the National Theatre of Hungary, we are being financially subsidized by this agency of the communist government of Hungary. These allegations are so ridiculous that they cannot be dignified with a direct reply! However, we did reply. Not head-on, as the authors would have liked in order to get us embroiled in a nonsensical brouhaha without end, but indirectly. We did so in our October/november issue, while you, our readers, did it with your letters-tothe-editor which we published in our December issue. Moreover, we will continue to respond in our own way by maintaining a realistic editorial policy dictated by you, our readers, and by the particular reader-market we have targeted for development. Accordingly, we cannot, and will not, permit this publication to become an instrument for ideo-political partisanship. We are not a weekly newspaper. Nor are we an ideopolitically oriented newsletter. The Eighth Hungarian Tribe is a general-interest magazine published mainly in English for Americans of Hungarian ancestry, most of whom cannot either read, write, or speak in Hungarian. This does not mean, however, that we are against their becoming knowledgeable about conditions in Hungary or in Rumanian-oppressed Transylvania. On the contrary, they should be informed. This is why we are helping to promote the sale of books about Hungary (etc.) that are available in English. Finally, we want to make it crystal clear, once and for all, that we are not against the cause promulgated by the “emigráció” and that, in no way, have we any interest in denigrating it as claimed. Out hope for the Hungarian community in America is unification and not fragmentation caused by differences in ideo-political philosophies. To this end, we are dedicated. We hope that our self-appointed critics will also dedicate themselves to the same objective. If no yet, perhaps John Hunyadi’s death-bed message to his fellow Hungarians may help them to make up their minds. The Eighth Hungarian Tribe is the official organ of the Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation. “Defend my friends, Christendom and Hungary from all enemies. Do not quarrel among yourselves. If you should waste your energies in altercations, you will seal your own fate as well as dig the grave of our country!” JANOS HUNYADI Support “The Eighth Hungarian, Tribe” Magazine.
