The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the ninth century A.D., was composed of seven tribes of Scythian-Sumerian origin. Hundreds of years later some of them left for a newly discovered land—this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To them, their descendents and to those joining them at a later date, this magazine is dedicated. The first issue of the Eighth Hungarian Tribe Magazine was published by Bethlen Press, Inc., April, 1974. The Eighth Hungarian Tribe with subscribers in every State of the Union and Canada. The Rumanian Ambassador to Washington is “one of the greatest liars of the universe” This statement was made by Mr. David B. Funderburk, former ambassador to Rumania from 1981 to 1985. He was speaking at the forum of the prestigious Heritage Foundation. Mr. Funderburk, now a professor at the Campbell University of North Carolina, said the State Department behavior toward Rumania is “TRAGICALLY WRONG___A PRO-SLAVERY POLICY”. He charged a network of career officials at the State Department work frantically “to denigrate information from the field” on Rumanian violations of human rights. “Secretary of State George P. Shultz only knows what the network tells him”, said Mr. Funderburk. He also charged that the State Department is “undermining President Reagan’s foreign policy”. Also speaking at the forum was Mr. Charles M. Lichenstein, alternate ambassador to the United Nations from 1981 to 1984. Lichenstein, now a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said career diplomats “control the supply of both carrots and sticks” within the State Department and foil policies they are against. A letter of concern to Washington about Rumanian oppression of her national minorities would now be timely. ,,,. _ Llias C. Chomos Letters Gentlemen: I am enclosing a check for $15.00 for the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Fund, but I wanted also to contribute through you as an American-Hungarian. I have been fortunate to have received a subscription to the Eighth Hungarian Tribe magazine from a dear friend. I truly enjoy reading each publication and able to keep up with my “Hungarian” — of which I am very proud. I have learned a lot by reading each issue I have received. Respectfully, Martha (Miklós) H. Clancy Trenton, New Jersey Note: By the way—would you know where or how I could purchase a “Statue of Liberty” Pin. Could you let me know? Dear Sir; Sorry for the delay. We really enjoy the Eighth Hungarian Tribe magazine. Please, don’t let the nitpickers destract you from publishing. It’s a tragedy that more people don’t realize that our Hungarian heritage will disappear soon enough through the evolutionary process. This constant bickering only speeds up the process and every one loses. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, John Gamauf Fountain ville, Pennsylvania Dear Sir; Enclosed you will find a money order for $15.00. Please renew my Eighth Tribe subscription for the coming year. It was due in May, 1985, but you still sent me the May and June issues. Thank you again for renewing my subscription. It is a wonderful magazine and it makes me proud to be a Hungarian. Thank you again, Olga Szabó Clifton, New Jersey Dear Editor: Lately you have been carrying articles by a Mr. Body. They are highly informative and they are certainly a plus for your magazine. Sincerely, Mrs. Rose Láncos Santa Barbara, Calif. Dear Sir: I look forward to Mr. Body’s article every month, I have learned so much from them, carry on. Best of luck. John Fekete New York, N.Y. Dear Sir: You certainly keep the Transylvanian question alive. I wonder if people send any help to those unlucky or^es? My wife and I have become Godparents to a child in Cluj (Kolozsvár). We have never known the family, obtained their address from a friend and find the experience most rewarding. Sincerely Eugene Markos Benning, Calif. Dear Sir: The Hungarian Life-Line by Mr. Ferec Sajgó alone is worth the subscription price. Good luck and God bless you. Your faithful reader, Mrs. Mary Benedek Newark, N.J. August, 1985 Page 3
