The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the ninth century A.D., was composed of seven tribes of Scythian-Sumerian origin. Hundreds of years later some of them left for a newly discovered land—this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To them, their descendents and to those joining them at a later date, this magazine is dedicated. The first issue of the Eighth Hungarian Tribe Magazine was published by Bethlen Press, Inc., April, 1974. The Eighth Hungarian Tribe with subscribers in every State of the Union and Canada. Letters to the Editor Dear Sir, Maybe it will not hurt if I also add my two pennies worth to the Rumanian-Hungarian controversy. Sociologists say that most everything in life has political, economical, and social causes. Let me remind you, how this controversy started already several years ago. In the early seventies, Rumania started to slip into an economic slump because of the blunders of a bad government. There were shortages of food, fuel, toilet articles, etc. There were strikes, protests, sabotage-actions, even the rumor of a suppressed military coup against the government. Peasants threw stones at Comrade Ceausescu when he once wanted to visit their farm. There are no more threats today in Rumania against the State President or the government. Did famine, poverty, the social and economic problems cease to exist? Is everything hunky-dory now in Rumania? No Sir! Today the Rumanians are so busy persecuting the Hungarians and the other minorities (Jews, Germans) that they have no time or energy left to care about their economic, social, and political problems. What’s happened? The government of Comrade Ceausescu started the persecution of the Hungarians and other minorities. Hungarians in the West and also in Hungary started to protest against the inhuman act committed by the Rumanian Government, the disregard for the civil rights of the minorities. Then Comrade Ceausesccu pointed his finger at the protesting Hungarians, and told the Rumanian population that the Hungarians want to take away from them Transylvania. It was as simple as that. The Rumanian patriotism (and chauvinism) flared up. The persecution of the Hungarians worsens every day. Then there are repeated protests, demonstrations against the Rumanian chauvinism, etc. The whole cycle is then repeated. This is a well-known method, that has been used for centuries by rulers and dictators, to distract the attention of the population from the sins of the leadership. The minorities are blamed for all problems, and the persecutions done by the majority are not punished by the government. It is not half a century ago yet that a dictator by the name of ADOLF HITLER used this same method with the Jewish minority of Germany. (Let us not overlook another similarity between Hitler’s Germany and Rumania today: Ceausescu's regime calls itself “national socialist." That’s what Hitler called his regime.) The Hungarian government is unable to do anything against this Macchiavellian scheme. They are afraid of even touching the problem of Transylvania. While the Hungarian minority in Rumania is persecuted with the full power and ferocity of the Communist Party, the attempts of the Hungarian government to ease the situation of their brothers in Rumania have remained on the level of some private dialogues. (The members of the Hungarian government are not overly bright.) expect a little bit more common sense from the Rumanians. Would it not be more advantageous for them if instead of persecuting their fellow Hungarians, Jews, Germans, etc. they would demonstrate together with them against this reinstatement of Nazism in Rumania? I am afraid that it would be too much to expect so much common sense from them. John Schmidt Pittsburgh, PA Gentlemen: Enclosed is my check in the amount of $15.00 for renewal of my subscription to the Eighth Hungarian Tribe newspaper, which I enjoy very much. In the March 1985 issue under the heading of “Kossuth’s Legacy to America”, you listed a Major General Alexander Asboth. This gentleman was an uncle of my father, Geza Asboth, who is now deceased. I visited Pea Ridge Battle Grounds in Arkansas where Alexander Asboth’s picture is on display and he is listed a Brigadier General. Also, I visited another Battle Ground in Arkansas and he is listed there as Brigadier General. Just wanted to call this to your attention. Sincerely, Rose Bowles Pueblo, Co. ERRATUM: On page 8, June issue, the article’s heading should have been: “ A HUNGARIAN SCHOLAR OF WHOM WE CAN BE PROUD”. PROMINENT ETHNIC FRATERNAL LEADER SWITCHES TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY John Sabo (Szabó), national president of the William Penn Association, the largest Hungarian fraternal organization in the U.S., announced he has switched from the Democrat Party to the Republican Party. Sabo made his announcement during the 15th annual convention of the National Republican Heritage Groups (Nationalities) Council in Washington, D.C. Sabo, a life-long Democrat, officially re-registered as a Republican, May 15, in Pittsburgh, PA. HUNGARIAN COOK BOOK in English-Attractive Covers $3.50 - including Postage _________Bethlen Press.
