Box 2203 Union, New Jersey 07083 Telephone: 201-964-8464 November 14, 1984 Dear Fellow Hungarian-American: Thank you for attending this meeting. Your presence is greatly appreciated. The purposes of this meeting are as follows: l) - to provide backgroun information about the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island restoration project; 2) - to explain how the ethnic communities in the United States are already making significant contributions towards the realization of this project; and 3) - the formation of a Steering Committee, consisting of representatives from Hungarian clubs, churches, and organizations in New Jersey, for the organization of a nationwide UNITED HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR THE RESTORATION OF TEE STATUE- OF LIBERTY-ELLIS ISLAND. The objective of this national Committee will be to launch and coordinate a nationwide fundraising campaign, within the Hungarian community in America, to help make a meaningful contribution, on its behalf, towards the 3230-million cost of restoring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and maintaining both as national monuments symbolizing what our great "Nation of Immigrants" stands for throughout the world. The Polish, German, Italian, and many other ethnic communities - EXCEPT THE HUNGARIAN- have already launched such UNIFIED fundraising efforts and, in the case of the Polish-American community, for example, 31,000,000 has been pledged. Others have pledged even more. It is sincerely hoped that, we Hungarian-Americans will prove that we are just as proud of our heritage as any other ethnic community in the United States, and that we, too, as free citizens of these United States of America, are proud of what the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island means to us, one and all, and to the oppressed peoples of the world.
