FERENC F. SAJGÓ: THE HUNGARIAN LIFE-LINE A Hungarian-American was the “Ambassador of Good Will” to France. Two hundred years ago, the Peace of Paris between Britain and United States was signed putting an end to the Revolu­tionary War. The anniversary of the event was commemorated in Paris. The governor of Tennessee appointed Sándor Bodo as ambassador of “Good Will” to France representing the State of Tennessee at the ceremonies. Bodo is an artist, who created a series of commemorative gold medals portraying the Euproean heroes of the Revolutionary War. Besides the medals showing the French, Polish an Prus­sian heroes there is a medal in commemoration of Col. Michael Kovats de Fabriczy. Bodo presented a set of medals to President Mitterrand dur­ing the ceremonies. Sándor Bodo and his wife Ilona came to the United States after 1956. The oil paintings of Mr. Bodo portraying Gen. Pulaski and Col. Michael Kovats de Fabriczy and the acrylic painting of Illona Bodo were praised in the American press, and appeared in this magazine many times. Meritorious Honor Award to Eva Eszenyi After twenty years of service at the Foreign Service Institute Eva Eszenyi retired. She was honored with a reception at the Institute. Stephen Low, ambassador, director of the Institute presented to Eszenyi the “Meritorious Honor Award” for her outstanding service. Eszenyi was honored also with two bronze plaquets, one of the Department of State given by Dr. Jack Andersohn, dean of the Institute and another of the Institute Page 6 given by Dr. David Argoff. The fellow professors and the students surprised her with two beautiful silver plates. Eva Eszenyi prepared almost one hundred young diplomats for assignment to Hungary during her long service. Many of her former students hold high positions at the Department of State. Kossuth Memorial Is In Danger A memorial was erected to Louis Kossuth in Cleveland in 1902. Actually, the memorial is in precarious conditions. The pedestal is dilapidated, the statue is cracked and corroded. If the memorial will not be restored soon, there is the danger that the city will remove the memorial. A committee was formed to save the memorial. A campaign has been started soliciting funds for the restoration. Csaba Kur, a sculptor is in charge of the reparation. More About Ambassador Salgo Miklós M. Salgo was born on August 17, 1914 in Budapest. He studied Law and earned a degree of doctor in juristic science at the University of Budapest. He joined Manfred Weiss Con­cern, one of the largest industrial conglomerate of Hungary at that time. Soon, he became the company’s representative in Switzerland. Salgo emigrated to the United States in 1948. He was active in business and he has established several well-known companies. He is part owner of the Watergate Complex. The Ambassador, who speaks German and French besides of English and Hungarian, held a press conference before he left for Hungary. At this, he said that his efforts will be directed toward the improvement of the relations between USA and Hungary and to promote closer cooperation between the two countries. George Solti Won Grammy Awards George Solti, conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, won four Grammy Awards, 1984, in classic and opera-music categories. László Könnyű receives honors Professor László Könnyű, (one of our columnists) who recently celebrated his Fiftieth Anniversary of his professional life, was honored by the Catholic University of St. Louis, Missouri by making him an Honorary Dean of the Faculty of the Universi­ty. Prof. Könnyű received his Master’s Degree in Geography twenty years ago at the University. Once again we congratulate Prof. Konnyu. “FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH” - by László L.
